Dion Beebe, one of Australia’s most celebrated cinematographers, will be honoured with the Pierre Angénieux Tribute at the Cannes Film Festival this month.
Now in its 12th year, the award, presented by French lens manufacturer Angénieux, recognises a cinematographer whose work has had a significant impact on the world of film. Past honourees include Roger Deakins, Philippe Rousselot, and Christopher Doyle.
Beebe will be presented with the prize during a ceremony opened by Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux and French journalist Charlotte Lipinska. The night will also see the Angénieux Special Encouragement Award presented to Korean DOP Eunsoo Cho.
Over the course of his more than three decade career, Beebe has collaborated with directors like Rob Marshall, Michael Mann and Jane Campion. His work on Marshall’s 2006 film Memoirs of a Geisha earned him both an Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Cinematography. Other credits include Holy Smoke, Chicago, Collateral, Miami Vice, Mary Poppins Returns, and 2023’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. His most recent Australian project was Helen Reddy biopic I Am Woman, directed by his wife, Unjoo Moon.
In addition to his work in film, Beebe is highly prolific in the world of music videos and commercials, having shot projects for Beyonce, Rihanna, Lana Del Rey, Arctic Monkeys and Tony Bennett as well as spots for brands such as Burberry, Guinness, Apple, Victoria’s Secret and BMW.
He is currently finishing Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, and planning a new musical directed by Marshall.
Beebe will be presented with his tribute May 23, 8pm at the Buñuel Theatre, Palais des Festivals. He will also deliver a masterclass on the morning of May 22, moderated by Jordan Mintzer of the Hollywood Reporter .
